Gordon Knibbs' Scout Hat

Object ID: 2014.36.1

This item was Gordon Harold Knibbs (1922-2010) hat, worn during his time with the Scout Troops. Gordon first became interested in scouting in the mid 1950's when his son Alan joined the Grief Point School Cub pack. Gordon rose through the ranks and became the Assistant District Commissioner for the Powell River District Scouts. He was asked to become the District Commissioner but declined, as he had been working in the Powell River Company pulp and paper mill. He worked in the finishing room, and later become a supervisor of the finishing room. His most notable achievement, however, is that he is one of the only members of the legion who served on D-day.

As a leader of the Powell River Districts Scouts, his role was to be the Administrator and record keeper for the District. He organized the Camporees and the Jamborees as well as other events. He helped Scouts who wanted to qualify for the First Class Journey which was the precursor to becoming a Queen's Scout. Knibbs acted as the tester for Scouts and Cubs obtaining their badges. He assisted in the development of Camp Nassichuk. He dealt with Headquarters in Vancouver and thought highly of the Chief Scout there Jack Adair as well as Adair's daughter Ruth. Knibbs, his daughter Sue and his son-in-law Mike, received his Gilwell scarf and toggle in 1972 at Camp Nassichuk which was the first course for Gilwell given at the Camp.
