Stillwater was named after the Minnesota home town of Michael Scanlon, an owner of the Brooks, Scanlon and O'Brien Logging Co. operating out of the bay.Scanlon and the Brooks brothers went on to build the mill in Powell River, the first pulp and paper mill in Western Canada.
